Sterinar™ Bottles Made from Kynar® PVDF

State of the high-end bottle market

Selecting plastic bottles presents a choice to many chemical suppliers and biopharma manufacturers: non-fluorinated polymer bottles for packaging and fully fluorinated bottles for wet chemistry analysis. A non-fluorinated bottle such as polyethylene is more cost-effective but has problems with extraction levels increasing over time and shelf-life stability. No one wants to be remembered for a ruptured bottle and spilled product. A fully-fluorinated bottle has no small-molecule extractions and excellent long-term mechanical strength but can be cost-prohibitive. Manufactured from a fully-fluorinated polymer such as perfluoro alkoxy (PFA) or fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) price limits the size and use of these bottles to very specific applications. Honestly, does anyone really buy bottles with volumes less than 1 liter for more than $100? This is insane! What the industry requires is a bottle with many of the properties of fully fluorinated polymers at the cost of non-fluorinated materials. Is this even possible?

Introducing a new option

Nile Polymers manufactures a third bottle option where performance is not limited by price. Now for a simplified explanation: Kynar® PVDF can be thought of as the offspring from the union of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyethylene (PE). PTFE has four fluorine atoms in each polymer repeat unit. PE has four hydrogen atoms in each repeat unit. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) has two fluorine atoms and two hydrogen atoms in each repeat unit. PVDF inherits the processing ease of PE with the amazing chemical resistance of PTFE. PVDF is an excellent bottle material for the storage and transportation of high-purity chemicals.

Flexible design possibilities for your requirements

No matter what you require, Nile Polymers can design and manufacture a PVDF bottle for your specific application. In addition to custom bottle designs, we can also provide common off-the-shelf bottle sizes. PVDF bottles find a wide range of applications including:

  • Reagent storage
  • Spectrographic analysis
  • Centrifugation
  • High-purity chemical containment without extraction contamination
  • Sterilization
  • Standards storage for trace analytics
